Why Christians Celebrated Earth Day

Date:

Share post:

April 22 marked Earth Day where we are reminded to be concerned about the environment. What started as a protest over the 1969 massive oil spill in Santa Barbara, California, Earth Day became an annual celebration all around the world of how to care for Mother Earth.

On Earth Day, many campaigns are done to show how we can help save our own planet. These include the one-hour lights off initiative, commitments to conserve energy, fun runs, and even apps to promote environmental action to name a few.

Christians are stewards of the earth. “The earth is the Lord’s, and everything in it, the world, and all who live in it” (Psalm 24:1).

In his Grace Moments Devotions in CrossWalk, Pastor Mark Jeske reminds Christians that this Bible passage echoes what was in the first chapters of Genesis wherein God entrusted Adam and Eve to care for the earth. Likewise, Christians are tasked to be in the forefront of cleaning the environment and respecting all those living in it.

Writer Tim Mascara of Relevant Magazine in his article, Why Earth Day Must Matter to Christians, also reflected on the psalmist’s song. He wrote that the Earth belongs to the Lord and He entrusted us to care for and nurture it. It’s an awesome partnership, but sometimes, we lose sight of this great responsibility.

A small pebble can create big ripples when thrown in the water. Mascara recommends small strides to show kindness to Mother Nature. These small strides could be being with nature and enjoying God’s beautiful creations, educating ourselves about our carbon footprint, or practicing some lifestyle changes.
